Description
Aloe has been documented since ancient times, appearing in Egyptian hieroglyphs as well as San and Khoi rock art, and has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine. Africa is home to more than 360 species within the genus Aloe, with Aloe ferox being the most widely used and commercially produced species in South Africa.
Aloe ferox, which is indigenous to South Africa, contains approximately 28% higher levels of aloin and 36% more amino acids than Aloe vera, which originates from the Americas.
The bitter exudate derived from the plant is well known for its digestive support and natural laxative properties. Its primary active compound, the anthraquinone aloe-emodin, functions as an intestinal anti-inflammatory and provides effective, natural relief from constipation while gently cleansing the colon.
Unlike chemical or harsh plant-based laxatives that act directly on the bowel muscles, aloe works in a gentler, indirect, and mediated way. This prevents the body from becoming dependent on it, making it a non-addictive, natural solution for constipation relief.
Aloe ferox acts as a potent purgative. The compound aloin is converted by colonic bacteria into aloe-emodin, the active form. Aloe-emodin works by disrupting the balance between water absorption from the intestine (via sodium transport) and water secretion into the intestinal lumen through a prostaglandin-dependent mechanism. This increases water content in the bowel, stimulating natural bowel movement. Because it does not directly stimulate intestinal muscles, it does not cause “lazy bowel.” This same mechanism also softens stool, eliminating the need for an additional stool softener.
In addition, Aloe ferox is recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cleansing properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic effects. It is also regarded as immune-supporting and is commonly associated with natural detoxification benefits.
