Glutamic Acid
DESCRIPTION
Glutamic Acid: Supports prostate health, muscle recovery, and brain function.
This amino acid is nonessential, used by the body to make human protein, essential for cell structure. It’s “nonessential” because the body creates it if needed. These amino acids are crucial for protein synthesis; some serve specialized functions. Glutamic acid originates from various amino acids, forming glutamine when aminated. With a carboxylic acid functional group, it’s one of two amino acids (aspartic acid being the other) with a net negative charge at normal pH. This feature makes it polar and often found on protein and enzyme surfaces, interacting with the surrounding aqueous environment.
As an organic compound, it’s among the 20 amino acids in animal proteins, primarily the ʟ stereoisomer. Like aspartic acid, glutamic acid’s acidic side chain can accept and donate ammonia, a harmful compound. Coupled with ammonia, it transforms into glutamine, safely transporting ammonia to the liver for conversion to urea and excretion by the kidneys. Free glutamic acid can be converted to ketoglutaric acid, part of the Krebs cycle, or transformed into sugars. The acidic side chain gives proteins a negative charge, increasing water solubility.
