Vitamin K is required in order to use calcium in the process of creating a healthy bone matrix. It activates a protein called “osteocalcin”, which is involved in the bone-building process. Osteocalcin binds calcium to the bone, thus strengthening the skeleton. Insufficient vitamin K leads to inactive osteocalcin that cannot bind calcium to the surface of the bone.
