Kraft Prediabetes Profile – 24 Hour Urine Kit Early Diagnosis of Insulin Resistance Meridian Valley Lab

Glucose & Insulin Response Testing   Code: 8075

Kraft Prediabetes 4-Hour Profile

The Kraft Prediabetes Profile evaluates insulin resistance patterns by measuring paired glucose and insulin across a four-hour oral glucose challenge.

Serial sampling reveals response curves that can flag early metabolic dysfunction long before fasting values show abnormalities.

  • 6 glucose & 6 insulin draws
  • 4-hour oral glucose challenge
  • Insulin response patterning
  • Clinician-ready report

Kraft Prediabetes Profile

24 Hour Urine Hormone Profiles

MVL has been offering the Kraft Prediabetes Profile for nearly 40 years. This test evaluates the insulin response, something that is overlooked in all other diabetes testing. Insulin resistance is commonly assessed by measuring fasting insulin or Hemoglobin A1C. Unfortunately, a low fasting insulin doesn’t tell the most important part of the story. Insulin resistance can only be properly assessed by seeing how a patient’s insulin responds to a glucose challenge over a period of hours. Even Hemoglobin A1C can be normal if very high levels of insulin are keeping blood sugar levels down.

Who Should be Tested?

It is estimated that that up to 30 million Americans have diabetes with 1.5 million new cases diagnosed every year. More staggering, an estimated 84 million Americans have pre-diabetes, and this is probably an underestimate. Given these statistics, an argument can be made for screening most people with tests designed for early detection, especially as these conditions are most successfully treated when detected early. Those patients most at risk include those who are:

  • Overweight or obese
  • Physically inactive or sedentary
  • Older than 45 years of age
  • Of African American, Native Alaskan, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander heritage
  • Have a waist-to-hip ratio of >0.9 for men or >0.85 for women
  • Have a waist circumference of 40” for men or 35” for women
  • Have a family history of insulin resistance, Type II Diabetes, osteoarthritis, or cardiovascular disease
  • Have a person history of PCOS, depression, or joint problems
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have an elevated HgA1C, elevated fasting glucose, or elevated 2-hour post-prandial glucose

Early Diagnosis of Insulin Resistance: Reversing Metabolic Decline

Insulin Resistance: Early Detection and a Roadmap for Reversal

Educational Webinar • Featuring Dr. Pushpa Larsen • Meridian Valley Lab

Insulin resistance is one of the most underdiagnosed and under-treated conditions in modern healthcare—yet it’s also one of the most reversible. In this webinar, Dr. Pushpa Larsen explores how functional lab testing can help identify insulin resistance early and provide a roadmap for reversal before the onset of Type 2 diabetes or other chronic conditions.

Earlier insulin insight = better prevention: functional markers can reveal risk before glucose and A1C shift.

Watch the Webinar

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Insulin resistance doesn’t just appear overnight—it develops gradually over time, often going undetected in routine lab panels. By the time fasting glucose levels are elevated, significant metabolic disruption may have already taken root.

Early markers of insulin resistance include:

  • Fatigue or brain fog after meals
  • Midsection weight gain
  • Cravings for sugar or refined carbs
  • Skin tags or darkened patches
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Difficulty losing weight despite effort

Fortunately, functional testing can detect these imbalances well before traditional labs flag them as “abnormal.”

The Limitations of Standard Testing

Many patients receive a “normal” result on their fasting glucose or A1c—yet still exhibit signs of metabolic dysfunction. According to Dr. Larsen, conventional tests may miss the window for true prevention. Instead, she encourages clinicians to explore more sensitive markers, such as:

  • Fasting insulin levels
  • Postprandial (after meal) glucose and insulin response
  • C-peptide
  • Cortisol rhythm (to assess adrenal stress as a contributor)
  • Triglyceride to HDL ratio
  • Comprehensive hormone testing (especially in women with PCOS)

The Functional Medicine Advantage

With Meridian Valley Lab’s testing panels, clinicians can uncover underlying causes of insulin resistance such as:

  • Hormonal imbalances (estrogen/testosterone/cortisol disruption)
  • Chronic stress and circadian rhythm dysfunction
  • Poor cellular response to insulin due to inflammation
  • Environmental toxicity or heavy metal exposure

These insights allow for targeted interventions before metabolic breakdown progresses.

Strategies to Reverse Insulin Resistance Naturally

Dr. Larsen outlines a multi-step approach to improve insulin sensitivity using personalized, root-cause strategies:

  • Stabilize blood sugar through balanced meals and reduced processed carbohydrates
  • Rebuild muscle with resistance training and movement throughout the day
  • Reduce stress via mindfulness, sleep optimization, and adaptogenic herbs
  • Support detoxification pathways to reduce inflammatory load
  • Optimize micronutrient intake, particularly magnesium, chromium, and omega-3s
  • Consider supplements like myo-inositol, berberine, or alpha-lipoic acid

These foundational steps can not only halt insulin resistance but also reverse early metabolic dysfunction.

What This Profile Measures

Paired glucose and insulin values are collected at
six time points from fasting through four hours post-challenge to visualize response
curves and insulin pattern types.

  • 6 glucose measurements (fasting → 4 hours)
  • 6 insulin measurements (fasting → 4 hours)
  • Assessment of insulin response patterning

Who Might Benefit

  • Patients with normal fasting labs but symptoms suggestive of dysglycemia
  • Weight gain, fatigue, post-meal crashes, or family history of diabetes
  • Therapy monitoring for nutrition, lifestyle, or medication adjustments

Preparing for the Test

  • Overnight fast unless otherwise directed by your clinician
  • Avoid strenuous exercise the morning of testing
  • Follow lab instructions for the glucose challenge and draw schedule

About Blood Sugar Control

Poor blood sugar control is an insidious problem that commonly has no obvious signs or symptoms for many years – sometimes decades — before it is detected. By the time a patient is diagnosed, much damage has already been done, laying the foundation for more serious problems and complications. The tragedy in this is that blood sugar dysregulation is highly treatable by non-pharmacological methods when caught early.

Meridian Valley Lab

A World Leader in Food Allergy and Hormone Testing

Meridian Valley Lab was the first lab in the USA to offer urine hormone testing to help doctors use Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy safely and effectively. Our pioneering spirit is in large part due to our Medical Director, Dr. Jonathan Wright, and his fearless dedication to serving humanity. Together, we have been taking laboratory testing to the next level since 1976. The core values at our laboratory are quality and accuracy. The staff working at all levels within our organization are fully qualified, conscientious and interested in providing the best laboratory services. We are proud of our comprehensive, extensive internal quality control and quality assurance measures. In addition to our own quality assurance program, we participate in proficiency testing services with the College of American Pathologists and the American Association of Bioanalysts. Meridian Valley Lab is CLIA Certified.
